Conditions We Treat
At Voice + Swallowing Solutions, we provide expert assessment and therapy for adults experiencing difficulties with communication, voice, and swallowing. Our personalised, evidence-based programs are designed to improve safety, independence, and participation in everyday life.
Swallowing Difficulties (Dysphagia)
Swallowing difficulties can make eating, drinking, or taking medications challenging and may increase the risk of choking, infections, malnutrition, or dehydration. They can also affect social participation and enjoyment of meals.
Common causes include:
- Neurological conditions (stroke, Parkinson’s disease, MND, MS, Huntington’s disease, acquired brain injury)
- Head and neck surgery or cancer treatment
- Airway or respiratory issues affecting coordination of breathing and swallowing
- Gastrointestinal issues such as reflux or delayed stomach emptying
We provide thorough swallowing assessments and personalised therapy. For complex cases, specialist investigations like Videofluoroscopic Swallow Studies (VFSS) or Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) may be used, often in collaboration with ENT and radiology teams.
Changes to Voice (Dysphonia)
Voice changes can make speaking tiring, less clear, or more effortful, affecting work, social life, and professional activities. Causes include:
- Nodules, polyps, cysts and granulomas
- Muscle tension dysphonia
- Vocal inefficiency, technique and artistry
- Vocal fold paralysis
- Laryngeal tremor
- Pre and post operative voice therapy
- Spasmodic dysphonia
We provide individualised voice assessments and therapy. For complex cases, we offer specialist evaluations such as Videostroboscopy in collaboration with ENT surgeons and laryngologists.
Upper and Middle Airway Disorders (including Chronic Cough)
Conditions affecting the upper and middle airway can make breathing, speaking, and physical activity more difficult. These issues may also cause anxiety or lead to avoiding certain activities. Conditions include:
- Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction (ILO/EILO)
- Exercise Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction (EILO)
- Laryngeal Hypersensitivity (Irritable Larynx)
- Persistent cough or chronic cough
We provide personalised assessment and therapy to improve airway control, reduce hypersensitivity and cough, and support effective breathing and voice function, helping you participate confidently in daily life.
Head and Neck Cancer
Treatment for head and neck cancer can affect swallowing, speech, and voice, impacting work, social life, and daily activities.
We support patients at all stages (before, during, and after treatment) with personalised rehabilitation for speech and swallowing. For patients who have had a laryngectomy, we provide specialised voice restoration. Therapy is often coordinated with ENT and oncology teams.
Language Disorders (Aphasia)
Aphasia affects your ability to understand or use words effectively, which can influence relationships, work, and daily tasks. It commonly occurs after stroke, brain injury, or other neurological conditions.
We use standardised assessments to understand your strengths and challenges, set personalised goals, and guide therapy. Evidence-based approaches help improve comprehension, expression, and functional communication, supporting confidence and participation in everyday life.
Cognitive-Communication Difficulties
Changes in thinking, memory, attention, or problem-solving can make everyday communication more challenging. These difficulties may occur after stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, or other neurological conditions.
Therapy focuses on practical strategies to support memory, attention, problem-solving, and social communication, helping you stay independent, confident, and engaged in daily life.
Changes to Speech
Neurological or muscular conditions can affect speech clarity, making everyday communication challenging. These difficulties may occur with conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke, or Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
We provide therapy to improve articulation, breath support, and speech intelligibility, using evidence-based programs such as LSVT LOUD®, SPEAK OUT!®, and PhoRTE®. Therapy is personalised to your communication goals, helping you speak more clearly and with less effort in daily life.
