Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study

A Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study (VFSS), also known as a Modified Barium Swallow, is a dynamic radiological assessment used to evaluate swallowing function.  The procedure involves the patient swallowing various textures of food and liquid mixed with a contrast material, allowing real-time X-ray imaging of the oral, pharyngeal, and oesophageal phases of swallowing.

VFSS is used for determining the presence of aspiration or penetration, and guiding evidence-based management of dysphagia. The results inform tailored recommendations for diet modification, rehabilitation strategies, and risk mitigation, supporting safe and effective oral intake.

The evaluation is performed in a Radiology Department, with one of the VSS speech pathologists, and a radiographer. A Radiologist can be consulted if required and will review the study after the examination takes place. There is no special preparation for the assessment (you do not need to fast for the procedure), and you may drive home afterwards.

Following the assessment, your referrer will receive a radiology report and detailed Speech Pathology report.
