Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing
A Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is a safe and widely used procedure that allows a detailed view of how you swallow. This is an advanced scope-of-practice skill that requires ongoing professional development. During the assessment, a thin, flexible camera is gently passed through the nose, allowing the Speech Pathologist to visualise the pharynx and upper airway while you eat and drink different textures.
FEES is a validated, instrumental assessment used to directly observe the pharyngeal phase of swallowing. The flexible nasendoscope provides a clear view of the larynx, pharynx, and upper airway while the patient consumes food and fluids of varying consistencies.
This assessment enables detailed evaluation of:
- Secretion management and airway protection
- Timing and efficiency of the swallow
- Presence and severity of penetration or aspiration
- Effectiveness of compensatory strategies, manoeuvres, and postural adjustments
FEES is safe, well-tolerated, and does not involve radiation exposure. It provides high-quality, real-time information to support accurate diagnosis and tailored management plans for individuals with suspected or confirmed dysphagia.
Referral Requirements
- A signed copy of the “FEES Consent Form” from the patient
- A signed copy of the “FEES Risk Management Checklist” from a GP or specialist
