Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study (VFSS)
A Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study (VFSS), also known as a Modified Barium Swallow, is a dynamic radiological assessment used to evaluate swallowing function. The procedure involves swallowing different textures of food and liquid mixed with contrast material, allowing real-time X-ray imaging of the oral, pharyngeal, and oesophageal phases of swallowing.
VFSS is used to identify aspiration or penetration and to guide evidence-based management of dysphagia. The results inform tailored recommendations for diet modification, rehabilitation strategies, and risk mitigation, supporting safe and effective oral intake.
The evaluation is performed in a Radiology Department with one of the VSS Speech Pathologists and a Radiographer. A Radiologist can be consulted if required and will review the study after the examination. There is no special preparation for the assessment (fasting is not required), and you may drive home afterwards.
Following the assessment, your referrer will receive both a Radiology report and a detailed Speech Pathology report.
Referral Requirements:
- A signed medical imaging form from a GP or specialist requesting a “VFSS with Speech Pathology”
Currently offered at:
- iMed Radiology Spring Hill – St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital

Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)
A Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is a safe and widely used procedure that allows a detailed view of how you swallow. This is an advanced scope-of-practice skill that requires ongoing professional development. During the assessment, a thin, flexible camera is gently passed through the nose, allowing the Speech Pathologist to visualise the pharynx and upper airway while you eat and drink different textures.
FEES is a validated, instrumental assessment used to directly observe the pharyngeal phase of swallowing. The flexible nasendoscope provides a clear view of the larynx, pharynx, and upper airway while the patient consumes food and fluids of varying consistencies.
This assessment enables detailed evaluation of:
- Secretion management and airway protection
- Timing and efficiency of the swallow
- Presence and severity of penetration or aspiration
- Effectiveness of compensatory strategies, manoeuvres, and postural adjustments
FEES is safe, well-tolerated, and does not involve radiation exposure. It provides high-quality, real-time information to support accurate diagnosis and tailored management plans for individuals with suspected or confirmed dysphagia.
Referral requirements:
- A signed copy of the “FEES Consent Form” from the patient
- A signed copy of the “FEES Risk Management Checklist” from a GP or specialist
- Medical history summary including a current medications list

ENT and Speech Pathology Voice Clinic
Ann Louise Spurgin and Laura Moroney have a special interest in laryngology, the study and treatment of voice, laryngeal, and upper airway disorders. They run specialised clinics in collaboration with ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) surgeons, using videostroboscopy to examine the vocal folds and upper airway in detail. This advanced technology provides a magnified, slow-motion view of vocal fold vibration and airway function, helping identify subtle conditions that may affect your voice or breathing.
During the assessment, a thin, flexible camera (nasendoscope) is gently passed through your nose after a local anaesthetic spray to view your larynx (voice box) and airway. The examination is recorded in high-definition, capturing both structure and movement. Afterwards, the ENT surgeon and Speech Pathologist will review the video with you, explaining what they see and helping you understand your voice and airway health, so together you can plan the most effective care.
